Maintenance Man Appointed as new Development Manager

Johnny Kelly the maintenance man here at Portumna Retirement Village has been appointed as Galway Hurling Development Manager.  Johnny will work with the current senior set-up in managing the player development structure that has been put in place. The management and staff at Portumna Retirement Village would like to wish Johnny every success in his new endeavour.

Staff Person of the Year

The Portumna Retirement Village ‘Staff Person of the Year Award’ was announced on Saturday 10th December. Over 120 nomination papers were submitted in recent weeks by residents, relatives, and staff. The award winner was John Smith. John has worked at the retirement village for just over three years and in that time has established himself as a firm favourite with both residents and staff . Congratulating John, Tony Williams, owner of Portumna Retirement Village recognised the tremendous respect that people have for John and paid tribute to John’s professionalism, his caring nature, and his unstinting commitment to residents and his colleagues.

In addition to the main award, several staff were awarded a €100 voucher as recognition for the quality of the service that they provide.

Presidential Election

The Presidential Election came early to the residents of Portumna Retirement Village as our Residents were listed on the special voters list and so got to place their vote earlier today.

A room was made available to the electoral presiding officer who set up the polling station. The officer was accompanied by a Garda whose role was to guard the ballot papers and to act as an independent witness to guarantee that the voting procedures were carried out properly.

The residents were delighted to have the opportunity to vote and were very happy with the arrangements that had been made to facilitate them.

Shorelines Arts Festival visit Portumna Retirement Village

The Residents at Portumna Retirement Village were lucky to access  the local Artist In Residence,  Ruth Smith, who is making her many skills available to the Shorelines Arts Festival this year.  Ruth payed us a visit on Wednesday afternoon and played and sang a wide variety of tunes.  She was helped out by our own resident James Murphy, who provided us with one of his own recitals. A great afternoon of singing, music and poetry was had by all.

Shorelines Arts Festival-The Delia Murphy Story

Shorelines Arts Festival is a celebration of the Arts in Portumna, providing a platform for local and guest artists. Portumna Retirement Village is delighted to provide the venue for the Delia Murphy Story.  it is an 80minute show celebrating the songs of Delia Murphy by the singer’s neice Carmen Cullen, writer and poet.  Music with guitarist, Gerry Anderson, and singer/actress, Mairin O’Donovan.

Fire Walking at Portumna Retirement Village

fire-walk-lisa-mThirty five staff from Portumna Retirement Village took part in a Fire Walk over hot coals on Tuesday 9th August. For two hours prior to the fire walk itself, the staff engaged in motivational exercises with the facilitator (Brian Moore of Peak Potential) , breaking wooden boards with their bare hands and bending steel bars by pushing against their throat. Each of these exercises helped to build their adrenalin and energy levels and at 11.00pm, each of the staff walked barefoot across twenty five feet of hot coals. Every staff member succeeded in the walk and found it exhilarating.

Infection Control

hand-hygiene-ritahand-hygiene-dayWorld Hand Hygiene Health Promotion Day was followed with a visit from Majella Hotton, Infection Control Specialist at University College Hospital London.

She facilitated a two day workshop that emphasied hand hygiene in a care environment. Practical aspects of the workshop involved staff and residents coating their hands with a specialised gel.  All were encouraged to wash their hands after to remove the gel.  Following this a specialised ultra violet ‘Glow Germ’ unit was used to assess the level of gel residue remaining after hand washing. This indicated the area of the hands not washed properly.

This workshop was attended by all staff and a number of residents. It was very informative and all who attended enjoyed the presentation and interaction.

World Hand Hygiene Day

May 6th, 2011

The 5th May 2011 was World Hand Hygiene Day. Here at Portumna Retirement Village we held an awareness morning showing the importance of hand hygiene. Staff and Residents all watched a video on the importance of hand washing. There was a demonstration on the correct procedures of hand washing and using the sanitizing hand rub. Our reception area was decorated with promotion posters and flyers. Visitors were also encouraged to take part. We were all reminded that ‘Clean Hands Save Lives’.

Portumna Beavers visit Portumna Retirement Village.

Residents were entertained and staff were given assistance on the 23rd March when the Portumna Beaver Scouts came to visit. The Beavers entertained the residents with their Irish dancing. They then assisted the staff in serving tea and cake to the residents.

HIQA Report

HIQA praises Standard of Care at Portumna Retirement Village

 

-         “ recognised as the leading nursing care home care in the West of Ireland”

The Health Information and Quality Authority have now published their report following their inspection visit to Portumna Retirement Village of the 2nd/3rd November 2010. The thirty-three page report details the findings of the inspectors under the following headings:-

§  Governance

§  Quality of Service

§  Healthcare Needs

§  Premises & Equipment

§  Communication

§  Staff

The report is very positive and the inspection team dedicated large sections of their report to the evidence of good practice that they found at the centre. Inspectors interviewed several residents during their inspection and received very positive feedback from them. The report also recognises the work and commitment of all staff in ensuring that all residents are well cared for and enjoy life at Portumna Retirement Village.

Although Portumna Retirement Village only opened in  December 2007, it has now been recognised as the leading nursing care home in the West of Ireland.

Residents Vote in General Election

The general election came early to the residents of Portumna Retirement Village as the residents listed on the special voters roll voted on Friday  18th February.

Last November management at the retirement village assisted all residents that wished to vote to register on the special voters list. All residents on that list as at the 25th November 2010 were given the opportunity to vote. The electoral presiding officer set up a polling station in the activities room. The officer was accompanied by a Garda whose role was to guard the ballot papers and to act as an independent witness to guarantee that the voting procedures were carried out properly.

The residents were delighted to have the opportunity to vote. Many expressed their view that they considered voting in the election as  very important, and they were very happy with the arrangements that had been made to facilitate them.

As to voting a week early?………..one resident commented that it was great – “one week less of canvassers”.

 

   

Appreciating the Elderly in Our Community – Competition sponsored by Portumna Retirement Village

There was much excitement in several schools in the locality when the winners of the ‘Appreciating the Elderly’ competition for local national school  students this week. The competition was sponsored by Portumna Retirement Village and the award winners were announced on Tuesday evening (2nd February 2011). 

At the prize giving reception held at the social centre in Portumna Retirement Village, twenty four students from five local schools received awards. These twenty four entries were deemed to be the best of over 250 entries received. The entries were submitted in five categories and there were individual winners of each category who each received a plaque and a gift voucher worth €25.  

The category winners were as follows:-

Junior/Senior Class - Aaron Larkin, Kiltormer NS

1st/2nd Class – Alan McDonagh Killeen NS, Clodagh McIntyre, Lorrha NS

3rd/4th Class – Ciaran Coen – Kiltormer NS

5th / 6th Class – Eric Flaherty Portumna NS, Aoife Gunning, Moyglass NS

 In addition to the individual awards, Portumna Retirement Village also awarded the prize of a laptop computer worth €500 to the school that submitted the best overall entries. This prize went to Portumna NS. The awards were presented to the students by Tony Williams and he congratulated all the children for the high quality of the entries and the insight that they each provided to their understanding of the value of elderly people to our community.

Portumna Retirement Village Celebrates 3rd Birthday!

The residents, management and staff celebrated the third anniversary of the opening of Portumna Retirement Village on the 4th December. Despite the inclement weather, the residents and staff were joined in their celebrations by many relatives and friends.

The afternoon began with mass celebrated by Fr Cathal Stanley and then the celebrations continued with music and dancing. The Portumna Active Retirement Group Choir entertained residents with songs and Christmas Carols. Music for the evening was provided by Richie Burke.

Tributes were paid to Tony and Alicia Williams for their foresight in establishing such a quality facility in the town of Portumna.  The nursing home has been supported in its work by so many members of the local community and has also been recognised as the leading nursing home in Co Galway.

The day was also marked as very special day for several of the staff and for two of the residents who have been at the retirement village since it opened on the 4th December 2007.

Contempo at Portumna Retirement Village

Our residents were delighted to be entertained by the Contempo String Quartet as part of the Shorelines Arts Festival at the weekend.  Contempo are recognised as one of the world’s top string quartets and have worked with many celebrated quartets and other world-renowned artists and have toured the world extensively.  Our residents thoroughly enjoyed the visit.  Also this weekend we were joined by local singers – Omna.  They are a lively group and encouraged the residents to join in with the different instruments they had brought along for them. What better way to pass a Sunday afternoon.

Schools Competition

In conjunction with ‘Positive Ageing Week’ in October, Portumna Retirement Village has invited local primary schools to participate in a competition for children that will promote an appreciation of the elderly in our society. Entrants from the participating schools will submit drawings, poems and essays that demonstrate the importance of an older person to them. There will be prizes for the best entries and also for the best overall school.

Activities

In recent weeks our Activities Co-Ordinator, Ruth, has been busy with the Residents painting a mural. Most of the residents had never painted before but they thouroughly enjoyed the experience. When completed the Mural will be framed and hung in our day room.

HIQA Report

HIQA (Health Information and Quality Authority) publish report 

The Health Information and Quality Authority has this week published its report on its recent visit to Portumna Retirement Village.

Management and Staff were very pleased to receive such positive comments on all issues inspected. In particular, the inspection team highlighted the training and education programme for staff, and the process of seeking feedback from residents and their families for ever improving quality of care.

Visit to Clonfert

May 12th, 2010

During the month of May, our residents will be making regular trips to Clonfert to pray to Our Lady of Clonfert.  Weather permitting we hope to go each week on our Retirement Village Minibus and stop off on the way home for light refreshments.

Alzheimer’s Tea Day

alzheimers-tea-day-1Today was National Alzheimer’s Tea Day and here at Portumna Retirement Village we had a very sucessful afternoon filled with tea and cakes, with  music provided by Mary Smith.  We would like to thank all who contributed to the day.
