Independent Living Units are compact homes specially designed for the older person who wants to remain independent in an environment that is safe, secure and caring.

The units have been developed at Portumna Retirement village in response to the increased demand in Ireland for assisted living units. Set in an attractive convenient location on the edge of the town of Portumna, the retirement village was opened in 2007 and offers its residents high quality, modern and stylish accommodation complimented by a secure community setting and the benefit of a host of on-site recreational and nursing services.

In total, there are twenty two units in the village. These are made up of one bed and two bed units. The primary criteria for any tenant of the properties is that they be over 55 years old, and their GP must be willing to confirm that the person is able to live independently.

The houses are well fitted out and they are fully furnished, but should the resident wish to use their own furniture, this can be arranged.

Residents of the independent livings units agree a two-part agreement upon taking up occupancy. The first part is basic tenancy agreement (as per Residential Tenancies Act 2004) and rent may vary depending on the exact property. A security deposit of four weeks rent is required. Tenants are expected to look after their own phone/electricity/gas bills, but many residents will qualify for the 'Household Benefits' package.

All houses are provided with:-

• Caretaker for assistance and maintenance

• Permanent nurse emergency response system

• Smoke detectors/Monitored Alarm System

• Use of Social Centre

• Electronic Gate Access

The second part of the agreement deals with the level of support and services that the resident wishes to avail of from the adjoining nursing home such as meals, laundry, and medication management. A tailored service plan is agreed with each resident. This allows residents to plan for their future, particularly if they do not have local family support. The extra services are available at an additional cost and are entirely optional.

Residents of the independent living units are also welcome to join in with the activities that are organised on site and also welcome to join nursing home residents on our regular 'outings'.
