Advocating Equality in Fair Deal

Representatives from private and voluntary nursing homes met with TDs and Senators on 20th June, to outline the challenges being presented in providing nursing home care. At present HSE nursing homes are being paid fees per resident that are 60% above those payable to their private and voluntary counterparts. This glaring anomaly and discriminatory practice in care of the older person must be addressed. A government review that was conducted last year has yet to be published. Publication of the review will facilitate an important discussion regarding the funding of the care needs of persons requiring nursing home care. Persons availing of nursing home care, whether HSE, private or voluntary, must be supported by a funding model and fees payable that recognise the true costs of providing high-dependency, 24/7 specialist care.
